Moutse Community Radio Station

In a rural environment, radio is the predominant way of receiving information, and there was keen interest on the part of the community in setting up Radio Moutse.

In 1994 the Moutse Rural Women's Movement took the initiative in the development of a community radio station. Hugo Tempelman has been a member of the board of trustees since 1994 and has been actively involved in starting up the radio station. Radio Moutse has been on the air since October 1997 and has proved to fulfil a very important function in the area, with 78 % of the Moutse inhabitants tuning into the station on a daily basis.

Wide interest has been voiced for the proposal of building a permanent home for the radio station, which is currently operating from an old government building. The idea is to build a centre that would house facilitate the radio station, a music library and possibly facilities to record CDs by local artists.
